- On 15 October the US administration announced purchases of Russian diesel.
- The official reason is rising diesel prices in the US ahead of winter.
- Purchases run under a temporary licence; other sanctions remain in place.
- Disputed: “The deal does not breach sanctions” — a US claim, disputed by Ukraine and some EU states.
Why it matters. Fuel prices in the US, an exception in the allies’ sanctions, Russia’s energy income.
